President Barack Obama has announced his support for same-sex marriage, making him the first sitting U.S. president ever to do so.

This history making announcement is a HUGE and bold political gamble, just months before the 2012 presidential election, yet we salute you Mr President!!!!

In an interview, with ABC Robin Roberts, the Commander In Chief said he had long supported civil unions but his position on same-sex marriages had been evolving because of the powerful traditions and religious beliefs attached to the word marriage.

“…I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”

After new broke, today, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres shared her delight . . .

“What an amazing day for our country. President Obama just came out in support of same sex marriage. And I say, wow, wow. There have been moments in history when someone has had the courage to stand up for what they believe in and that one action changes everything. I hope that this is one of those times. It takes a brave man to take a stand like this especially in an election year. Mr. President, to you, I say, thank you, very, very much.”
